Of the many albums released by Daniel Treacy and company, 1992's CLOSER TO GOD is widely considered to be both their masterpiece and also one of their bleakest works. Though the songs are presented in the same charmingly ragged guitar-pop fashion as earlier gems such as PRIVILEGE and AND DON'T THE KIDS JUST LOVE IT?, accented occasionally with strings and saxes, the topics covered here are often extremely dark.
Songs like "Razorblades and Lemonade" and "My Very First Nervous Breakdown," for all their surface jollity, concern suicide attempts and deep depressions in unflinching first-person terms. It's not all gloom, however; both the epic eight-minute title track and "We Will Be Your Gurus" are upbeat and cautiously optimistic, and "Goodnight Mr. Spaceman" has a self-deprecating wit, mocking Television Personalities-inspired scenesters like Creation Records and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie in an avuncular manner. CLOSER TO GOD is a shaggy jangle-pop masterwork.
